About the Gay Buddhist Fellowship

Our Mission

The Gay Buddhist Fellowship exists to support Buddhist practice in the gay men's community Our understanding of practice includes, but is not limited to, traditional Buddhist practices such as meditation and mindfulness, individual forms of practice, compassionate service in the community, and relationships with teachers and spiritual friends. GBF is a forum in which all of the distinct Buddhist traditions can be brought together to address the spiritual concerns of gay men.

We respect and care for each other in a compassionate way as an expression of the full realization of the Dharma. We recognize that every aspect of our lives is practice. We cultivate a social environment that is accepting, open, inclusive, and caring. We acknowledge and support the growing network of gay practitioners in the United States and around the world. In addition, we intend to create programs that contribute to the well being of the larger community.

Sunday Sittings

General meetings are held every Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the San Francisco Buddhist Center, 37 Bartlett Street (one block west of Mission Street between 21 st and 22nd Streets). These meetings feature a half-hour silent meditation followed by a speaker or general discussion and then a social hour. Everyone is welcome whether they are new to Buddhism or are experienced practitioners. Discussions focus on the relationship between Buddhist meditation and teachings, and our daily lives and experiences as gay men. We also discuss the wisdom of other spiritual traditions.

Retreats

Periodically, GBF sponsors half-day, full-day, or weekend retreats. These retreats emphasize sitting and walking meditation, chanting, loving-kindness practice, and dharma discussion. Retreats are announced in the monthly newsletter. They are an opportunity to begin or to deepen one's meditation practice and to experience community among GBF members.

Community Service

Currently, through financial donations or volunteer time, GBF funds and prepares a monthly meal for residents of a shelter for homeless families. GBF is also an affiliate of the Buddhist Peace Fellowship. We also welcome suggestions for other forms of engaged practice.

Social Events

GBF sponsors informal events such as potluck dinners, an annual picnic, and other sangha-related activities. These are enjoyable events that lead to deeper friendships and an expanded sense of community or sangha.

Steering Committee

The Steering Committee consists of from 3 to 15 GBF members who meet once a month to plan and coordinate Buddhist practice events, social events, and the on-going development of our spiritual community. Meetings are open to all interested GBF members. We believe that service in this governing group is an important practice opportunity.

Volunteer Opportunities

If you would like to become more involved with GBF, pick a committee and come to its meeting. All committees are open at various levels of commitment. For more information, contact any steering committee member or project coordinator.

It also serves as a forum where gay Buddhist men can address spiritual concerns regardless of their form of practice or tradition. There is also a cyber forum available through the GBF Yahoo group
